High Lead Levels Hurt Achievement in Detroit Public Schools

A few people, including Michael Martin, have been making the claim that in many cases, the low academic achievements of minority students can be blamed to a very large degree on lead poisoning.

Here is an article on a large-scale study in the Detroit Public Schools which strongly suggests that he is right.

Given DC’s past problems with massive lead contamination in the water supply, I would be very surprised if lead poisoning was not also a problem here in the nation’s capital.

  1. Well, I’m sure our resident genius, Ms. Rhee, can sweep the lead out if we give her a big enough broom….right?

    • Remember her claim? That any claims that poverty, child abuse or neglect, lead poisoning, bad dental care, and so on will cause some students to perform poorly are just “crap”.
