Ras Baraka for Mayor of Newark, NJ – meet him in DC tomorrow night

Those of you interested in opposing the suffocating grip of billionaires on our economy and on our public education system should go see Ras Baraka tomorrow night at Busboys and Poets 2021 14th St NW  from 5 – 7 pm; it’s a fundraiser, so admission is $50.

He is a candidate for mayor of Newark, NJ, whose schools have been under state  control for nearly 20 years.

Read the press release below and consider contributing to his campaign and that of Andy Shallal here in DC, who has a similar platform.

Councilman Ras Baraka has been a grassroots leader in the fight for social justice in Newark for 20 years.  He was a teacher, union rep, and just took leave from being Principal of Central High School to run for mayor.  As Principal, Baraka led a bottom-up education reform effort that resulted in graduation rates increasing from 50% to 80% over five years. Based on that experience, Baraka developed the just released Blueprint to Achieve Excellence in Newark Schools — a plan to transform Newark schools, even though Governor Christie’s imposed Superintendent Cami Anderson technically runs the school system.

Baraka has been at the forefront of a community uprising against Anderson’s so-called “One Newark” plan — released in December — that closes public schools, expands charters, and lays off hundreds of teachers, even as they hire hundreds through Teach for America.  Please see these short videos of Baraka confronting Anderson at recent School Board meetings attended by hundreds of outraged community members.

Baraka now leads in the polls in a heads up race against the founder of the Newark chain of KIPP Academy charter schools — making the race is a proxy war in the education reform movement.  Baraka’s victory will be a victory for public education and teachers nation-wide.  Baraka was recently endorsed by Diane Ravitch’s Network for Public Education, as well as many local labor affiliates (e.g., of SEIU, LiUna, HPAE, Essex County AFL-CIO Council, CWA).
