ISIS / ISIL /Daesh Atrocities

Lest we forget: the primary victims of Muslim extremism are other Muslims and groups in the Middle East that don’t go along with the ISIS craziness. The victims get killed and dumped into mass graves.

This article from the Associated Press gives a lot of details of these atrocities and crimes against humanity.

Who knew that this sort of sickness would be the end results of the CIA funding anti-Soviet, hardline Muslim extremists in Afghanistan 30-40 years ago, and the invasion of Iraq starting 13 years ago? Certainly not the American spokespeople who claimed that American troops would be welcomed in Iraq as liberators.

  1. Who knew that this sort of sickness would be the end results of the CIA funding anti-Soviet, hardline Muslim extremists in Afghanistan 30-40 years ago, and the invasion of Iraq starting 13 years ago? Well those us of us outside the USA did not. We had not expect that level of incompetence from the USA.

After Soviet-American War in Afghanistan, the USA dropped their puppets, err, Afghan allies, like a hot potato which was not smart. A mini-Marshall Plan would have made a lot more sense.

The invasion of Afghanistan was dumb, and almost certainly unnecessary since the Taliban was ready to discuss extraditing Al Qaeda personnel to a mutually agreed upon Muslim country but without the Iraqi invasion it probably would only have meant a few Al Qaeda people blowing a few things up here and there. No big deal, sort of like a normal week’s casualty figures in the mass killings we see in the USA.

The total stupid act was invading Iraq. Did anyone in Washington wonder why George Bush the First halted at the Iraqi border? Maybe he and allies like the Saudis actually had a clue about what might happen with Saddam gone? Obviously his son and idiot “advisers” did not.

Most of that bunch of neo-con idiots who advocated an invasion had never been in the Middle East—I wonder if most of them had ever been outside the USA– and lived in dreamworld where they could bring “democracy” to the Middle East, probably while getting an iron grip on Iraqi oil.

Everyone outside of the USA and Tony Blair knew that the excuses used to justify the invasion were either total crap or deliberate lies.

The rest of the world was not really expecting American troops to receive a rapturous welcome. Remember Madeleine Albright saying, in about 1995, that UN (read US and perhaps UK) sanctions killing 500,00 Iraqi children was worth it to get rid of Saddam Hussein?

I am sure most Iraqis heard that statement. Iraq was not a third world county. It was, perhaps, not a first world country but it was modern, sophisticated, with a highly educated middle class, well at least before the bloody sanctions. Many Iraqis spoke English—many would have been educated in the USA or UK—so they understood Albright directly, no need for a translation. No way Saddam’s propaganda machine was faking the quote.

It was not likely to endear the US troops to Iraqis, particularly those families who had lost children due to poor nutrition or lack of medicines due to the sanctions.

We did expect the Iraqis to be reasonably pleased to get rid of Saddam and they appeared for the first few weeks or even 3 or 4 months to be reasonably so.

What we were not expect was the outstanding, indeed absolutely brilliant, incompetence of the American occupation in Iraq that finally created ISIS.

Send in troops with no cultural sensitivity training. Just the US troops habit of addressing every adult male as “hajii” was deeply insulting as it seems to denigrate Islam. I’m a Westerner and certainly not a Muslim but I was shocked. Invade the womens’ quarters in night-time raids on residences!

Send in an occupational government who seemed to have the knowledge of Iraq, its history, culture, religious divisions, etc., that one could get from the back of a baseball card while flying to Baghdad. Did no one seem to think that it might be a good idea to bring along a few Arabic speakers?

Fire all members of the Ba’ath Party—this meant just about the entire government, teachers, university faculty and who knows what else—since membership was a requirement for just about any job above ditch digger.

Disband the entire Iraqi army but leave them with their weapons and no jobs.

Don’t recruit educated and highly skilled Iraqis for reconstruction projects, often reconstruction on installations and infrastructure they had built or operated before the invasion. Leave them unemployed.

Send in American contractors like Halliburton who seemed as incompetent (or maybe just crooked) as the occupational government. Who did a terrible job.

Send in mercenaries like Blackwater and exempt them from both Iraqi and US law, either civil or military so they could shoot people with impunity.

More or less arbitrarily, arrest and detain just about any male over the age of 10, throw them into Abu Ghraib and other prisons and torture (interrogate) them.

One sometimes wondered if George W was an Al Qaeda plant à la Manchurian Candidate. I mean, he did everything he could to support their growth and the creation of ISIS.

No we did not expect the Iraqis to really welcome American troops but we did not, in our wildest dreams consider the total stupidity and incompetence that would lead to ISIS.
