DC Charter Schools that took PPP money

As you know, Congress set up a Paycheck Protection Program for small businesses to use during the COVID shutdown, so that they could continue to pay their workers. Public and Charter schools are still paying their employees, and their funding has not (yet) been cut.

However, the national charter school lobbying group recommended that charter schools should take out these loans anyway, because, uh, they want more good government dollars. And many, many did just that.

How many charter schools in DC took the money, we don’t know, because only those who “borrowed” over $150,000 are listed, plus, the list doesn’t say exactly how much they got, but just a range (eg from $1 million to $2 million).

Will they have to pay it back? That depends on the citizens.

However, here are the charter schools that ‘borrowed’ a large amount of $$ here in Washington, DC.

Thanks to Mercedes Schneider and the Network for Public Education for making this data easily findable.

A Warning to ‘Teach for America’ Noobies from Mercedes Schneider concerning special-needs students

Mercedes Schneider gives a serious warning to members of ‘Teach for America’ concerning grandiose plans by its current leadership to have untrained TFAers be in charge of diagnosing and treating special-needs students. Here is a small part of it and a link to her article:

“Do not place yourself in a position to damage the vulnerable via a naivete exacerbated by an inflated ego.

“You could harm students. You could be harmed by students. You could be held legally responsible.

“Do not mistake enthusiasm for invincibility.

“If you really want to assist special needs populations, make the appropriate investment. Return to school and treat your decision as an honest, long-term career move.”

Who are the Edu-DEformers?

Mercedes Schneider has done an admirable jobs of sleuthing out the Edu-DEformista leadership of a group called the National Council on Teacher Quality. This link takes you to part XIII (or 13) of MKS’ perusal of the NCTQ board, but she is up to part XVI (16) as of this writing.

Also don’t miss the exposes of  ‘Jersey Jazzman’ .

The NCTQ board is mostly made up of people who have never taught in a classroom a single day in their life but who are ‘bold’ reformers –often hedge-fund gamblers – committed to data and measurement and DEforming public education (which they neither attended or worked in).

There are a few others who are more akin to the five-week wonder, Teach-For-Awhile teacher with a grand total of TWO years of classroom experience (at which she most likely was a dismal failure) and an expired teaching license, who is now in charge of all of teacher training for the entire state of Louisiana.

Lastly, let me point people in the direction of Diane Ravitch’s blog. She is doing a tremendous job, in my humble opinion, despite the fact that she is obviously deluding in thinking that I’m doing a more than adequate job at exposing venality and hypocrisy in US education.
